Join a company dedicated to precision, safety, and service excellence. At Motive , we’re powering the nation’s critical infrastructure—from fiber optics to utilities—and we’re looking for a detail-oriented and safety-conscious Utility Locator to support our field operations in Oceanside, CA .

As a Utility Locator, you’ll play a key role in identifying, marking, and documenting underground utility lines before excavation activities. This role involves field work across residential, commercial, and industrial environments and requires proficiency with advanced locating technologies, including GPR (Ground Penetrating Radar) and electromagnetic equipment .

Key Responsibilities

  • Use GPR, electromagnetic locators , and other advanced tools to accurately locate underground utilities.
  • Partner with senior Locators to mark and record locations of utilities such as gas, electric, water, sewer, telecom, and fiber optic lines.
  • Interpret utility maps, site plans, and as-builts to guide locating efforts.
  • Conduct field surveys, prepare documentation, and submit timely reports of findings and discrepancies.
  • Utilize digital mapping tools including ArcGIS , Google Maps , and handheld data collection devices.
  • Calibrate, maintain, and ensure operational readiness of locating equipment.
  • Communicate effectively with contractors, internal teams, and clients to address any field challenges or utility conflicts.
  • Support comprehensive field services such as traffic control, inspections, and pre-construction investigations.
  • Adhere strictly to safety regulations and company standards while on-site.
  • Work in diverse conditions—urban and rural, varied terrain, and all weather environments.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; technical training in underground utility locating or construction is a plus.
  • 2+ years of field experience locating underground utilities (telecom, gas, water, electric, fiber, etc.), including GPR usage (preferred).
  • Working knowledge of underground construction techniques such as micro-trenching and boring.
  • Strong grasp of utility color codes , marking standards, and field safety procedures.
  • Comfortable lifting up to 75 lbs and walking or standing for long periods in varying environments.
  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record; able to safely operate company vehicle.
  • Willingness to work overtime and respond to on-call needs during evenings or weekends.
  • Excellent organizational and multitasking abilities with strong attention to detail.
  • Strong communication skills and professional field presence when interacting with customers or project teams.
  • Ability to read, understand, and interpret maps, blueprints, and field notes.
